A difference could be that in Revelation Jesus himself says he is at hand, whereas in Luke, Jesus is talking about others who would presumptously say he is at hand. But both passages could be said to be prophetic 'time capsules' of a sort.

I actually think this is one of the better tracts. It focuses on the basics, instead of creedal or speculative stuff. It's not perfect (eg, a 'heavenly government' is only a part of God's Kingdom, in the same way a government is only a part of a nation or dominion.) but it's not too bad. It also puts too much emphasis on bible knowledge rather than belief and faith in Jesus.

Jesus specifically warned at Luke 21:8 not to be sucked in by those who would proclaim that the end is near. This is exactly what the WTS does, ad nauseum.

Haha so does that mean Cyrus the Mede was kind of like a modern Ahmadinejad (or Ayatollah) of Iran invading Babylon the Great and Belshazzar who would be like Saddam Hussein of Iraq!

VOTE YOUR "SILVER BULLET" QUESTION
by V ini'm quizzing all my sources for the ultimate "silver-bullet" question for a jw at your door.
the best questions will be used in a video series on watchtower comments.
the goal is to help people respond to jws.. the question must be direct and designed to open the jw mind, not necessarily to win an argument.. i would prefer to avoid doctrinal debate such as trinity, cross, even thiest/athiest subjects.

How come the US taxpayer has to bail out the greedy, immoral bankers
by yadda yadda 2 in$750 billion.
thats about $2,000 for every us citizen.. what i don't understand is how come it is viewed as communism and interventionism to interfere with the market when the times are good, but as soon as it all goes sour, the us government immediately intervenes to bail the market out and mortgage future generations of hardworking us taxpayers?
it's almost surreal.

Where is the accountability in all this? Aren't there rules about prudent investment decisions and fiduciary duties?
I wouldn't bail the bastards out unless a strict new regime was immediately put in to make the greedy pricks accountable for their actions. CEO's and the wall street bankers should have to answer for this. Why aren't any heads rolling!!!!

Did you know the GB sometimes debate things, present different interpretations, vote on things and only require a 2/3rd majority to make some change? So why is it that members of the Governing Body can dissent, argue and disagree amongst themselves and yet their anointed 'brothers' who are outside the Watchtower in a congregation are not allowed to disagree or dissent on anything coming from the GB?
If the FDS are all charged with teaching and they are all equally anointed, then why is all of the interpretation and doctrine controlled only by the GB and their committees? What if a humble member of the FDS in an ordinary congregation gave you a very convincing interpretation of something that was at odds with the Watchtower's interpretation? Is the holy spirit contradicting itself?
What is more important: truth or unity? Did you know that in a Court in Scotland the highest ranking members of the Watchtower admitted that even if something is false, it should be believed if it is promoted as truth, because the unity of the organisation is the paramount thing.
How could it be that the FDS were given authority over all Christ's belongings in 1919 when Jesus said that wouldn't happen until he arrives? Did you know that the Watchtower Society at Matthew 25:30 & 31 interprets Jesus arriving there as a yet future event?
Would you really want to worship a God who would massacre for all eternity 90% or more of humankind at Armageddon, with no hope of a resurrection? How is that reconciliable with being a God of love? Doesn't the Bible say that it is the Devil who is a manslayer, yet wouldn't Jehovah also be a global manslayer if he did that? Wouldn't it mean that the ransom sacrifice failed, was of little worth of Jehovah did that? Didn't Jesus say he came to save the world, not destroy it? Why would Jehovah resurrect billions of already dead unrighteous persons after slaying billions of unrighteous persons at Armageddon? Don't you see the monstrous contradictions in this?

I agree that's definitely the way the new version Watchtower's are sounding, but the Society could just as easily retain numbers and keep the money rolling in by easing up a bit. If they made life easier for JW's and stopped brow-beating them, JW's, and in particular the elders, pioneers, and youth, wouldn't burn out and throw in the towel so much, like they presently are in droves. The Watchtower has been fearmongering and browbeating since Joseph Rutherford took control. The recent increase in this rhetoric is not that much different from what they've always been saying.
You can catch more flies with honey than vinegar. I believe some of the GB are starting to realise that. The recent 'lighting the load' changes appear to be a testing of the water. The GB want to know what effect this will have on statistics and donations. Browbeating isn't working, so making the 'load' lighter might. They are getting desperate. The upcoming change from three separate meeting days a week to two (combined 3 meeting) and reduction in pioneer hours will probably pay a big dividend in increased publisher retention come the end of 2008/09 service year. If that happens, expect the trend to continue.

Fading becomes ground for disassociation
by passwordprotected inhere's what i think will happen as i continue to develop my wt sleight of hand thought.... .
faders are a problem.
they want their cake and they want to eat it too.

I respect your opinion but I don't see it going that way. What could happen is JW's who are regular and active (sounds like those who take laxatives) in the JW works programme will begin to receive stronger and stronger counsel to 'exclude' those who are 'walking disorderly' (ie, inactive ones, faders). The weak, inactive and faders will not be disfellowshipped because it will just be too much of a stretch to apply scriptures to such an action. They will simply get marginalised more and more...
Actually, after Jaracza and Barrs deaths I think it could in fact swing the other way. The disfellowshipping policy may just as easily be changed so that JW's no longer have to shun family members and close friends who are simply leading sinful lives. Only those who are 'apostates' and speak against the organisation will be shunned. That is in fact a lot closer to what the scriptures actually teach on the subject, so would be easy to justify to the congregations scripturally.
I suspect there are some on the GB and the strata of heirarchy just below who are already of a mind to relax the policy along those lines. No doubt they are the younger GB members, some of whom have children, who have been pushing through recent changes to 'lighten the load' on the rank and file.
If they don't do something the youth will continue to leave in droves.
